Reception theory: blog task
1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?
The meaning the producers intend to communicate. This builds on the idea that producers can position the audience in a certain way and influence their reading so they accept the intended message by using recognised codes and conventions
2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?
The oppositional reading goes against the meaning the producers are trying to create. The audience reject the intended message and construct an opposite reading instead. This can be due to their own social, political or moral beliefs and values.
3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
The Harry Brown trailer portrays teenagers as violent and reckless as there are scenes of them causing mayhem and gruesome acts.
4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?
Young people may have a different interpretation of themselves for example to not be violent also they may say it depends how you are brought up and its not all teenagers like that.
5) Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.
Preferred reading -
Mcdonalds made a double burger and made it out to be a whole meal on the advertisement .they want the audience to think that it is delicious and big in size therefore it will be worth the price. This would attract a lot of fast food lovers.
Negotiated reading-
Some people may agree with the mcdonalds advertisement of the new burger as it is a new addition to the mcdonalds menu futhermore the description of the ingredients in at bottom of the poster have been described in delicious ways ,for example "crunchy" however some people may disagree with this advertisement as young people are mainly the age target for fast but also they should eat full healthy meals so that they can get all the vitamins and good substances they need from meals . the caption "a meal disguised as a sandwich would suggest to young people that they do not need to eat a full healthy meal and just need to eat this new burger.
Oppositional reading-
People would disagree with this new meal as it is unhealthy as it is 2 burgers filled with oil and fats and does give people the vitamins they need from meals also it has been fabricated as a meal when it is clearly not.
6) Now find your own advertisement and write a 150+ word analysis using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.
Preferred reading-
Dunkin Donuts has made this advertisement so that they would attract more customers for breakfast as the the title in bubble writing says "real food for your busy lifestyle " this is targeted for the older ages as they would have to go to work every morning preferably business people.
Negotiated reading-
Some people may disagree with this advertisement because the are busy and do not have time to make breakfast. However, some people may disagree because the food does not particularily healthy .
Oppositional reading-
The food that would possibly contain much fats . People would disagree with this advertisement because it is "vital" to have a full healthy breakfast to get all the healthy vitamins you need to start your day of good especially if you going to work.
