Audience Effects Theory

1) Write a definition of a passive audience:
Passive: This is the view that audiences passively take in information from the media and that these messages have the same effect on everyone.
2) Write a definition of an active audience:
Active: This is the more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with and make conscious choices regarding the media they consume.
3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:
This is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds. This assumes no individual difference in audience members.
4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE:  History Documentaries
Why:This is because information/surveillance is learning information that you did not already know . Some people may not be interested in history and not have a satisfied amount of knowledge about the past and would not learn about it in there spare time ,therefore history documentaries might be an unusual media product.
IDENTITY:Cooking shows
Why:  This is because "identity" is personally relating to something - seeing your lifestyle on screen.A cooking show is a great example because everyday people cook therefore cooking shows could possibly teach people a new dish to cook.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Horror Films
Why:This is because diversion/entertainment is escapism and being entertained away from your normal life.Events in a horror films does not happen everyday for example - killing , ghosts , clowns etc , however horror films is an entertaining  media product that have a lot of followers or fans of that kind of film .horror films take people away from their peaceful mindset and give them thrill and a gory experience.
RELATIONSHIPS:Love island
Why: This is because "relationships" is social interaction, caring about characters or celebrities, forming relationships e.g watching a soap opera for a long time because you care about what happens to long-standing characters.Love island is a perfect example of a relationship media product because the get random people on a show to find love it involves a lot of drama and tension with a lot of emotions . which grabs a lot of peoples attention.
